Skater Anatomy Relay (Biology) – Through a game of matching clues to body diagrams, skaters learn about the muscles and joints used in skating and learn about injury prevention.

-
The Physics in a Spin – Using a spinner or swivel chair, skaters experience angular momentum firsthand and learn how changing body position (like bringing hands in while spinning) affects speed.

-
Cool Chemistry – Skaters explore freezing point depression by adding salt to ice and measuring temperature changes, learning about how ice in the rink stays frozen.

-
Environmental Science – By designing eco-friendly rink models, skaters learn about sustainability and energy use in the rink.
Sustainable Scrap Partnership Program
Keeping Skate Manufacturing Byproducts Out of Landfills
In 2025, we partnered with a U.S. skate manufacturer to redirect nearly 100 pounds of leather scraps, byproducts of the skate‑boot manufacturing process, from landfills. Working with local artist communities, we transformed these materials into creative, functional projects.
We are expanding this initiative to partner with additional manufacturers to help adopt an eco-friendly approach and ensure that skate manufacturing byproducts are repurposed for meaningful use, instead of filling up landfills.

Skate Manufacturers - Help Shape a Greener Future for Our Sport!

We welcome partnerships with manufacturers who want to reduce waste and support sustainability. We can help you:

-
Repurpose leather scraps and material byproducts from the skate‑boot manufacturing process.
-
Redirect scrap to artists, crafters, educators, and nonprofits who can use it creatively and responsibly.
-
Keep valuable materials out of landfills and support a circular, community‑driven reuse model.
Skate Decor for Sustainability & Community Impact
Repurposing skates that are not reusable
In winter 2024, we launched our first skate‑decor initiative by transforming used figure‑skate boots into festive holiday decorations. We held a pop-up fundraiser of these one‑of‑a‑kind pieces at the Kendall Square Holiday Ice Show benefiting Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH). Attendees who donated to FSH received a decorated skate as a thank‑you. Additional pop-up tables at local Christmas tree stands helped raise even more support for the organization.

In summer 2025, we expanded this idea into an educational workshop for 26 young skaters at the figure skating summer camp at The Skating Club of Boston. Skaters learned how to repurpose used skates into creative home decor while exploring sustainability in the sport they love.

Let us help you run a fun off‑ice activity that gives your skaters both a memorable keepsake and a hands‑on lesson in sustainability.
-
We can provide a step‑by‑step guide, customizable materials lists, setup instructions, and a video walking you or your participants through the craft activity.
Used Skate Drives
Collecting Skates, Extending Their Life, and Reducing Waste
Winter 2024 Skate Drive
We launched our first collection effort in winter 2024, placing donation bins at three local partner locations—Cooke’s Skate Supply, Home Ice Skate Store, and Hayden Ice Rink. Thanks to our community, we collected approximately 70 pairs of used skates, most of which still had plenty of life left on the blades.

Summer 2025 Skate Drive
Building on that momentum, our summer 2025 skate drive expanded to five locations: Cooke’s Skate Supply, Home Ice Skate Store, Edge Sports Center, Nashoba Valley Ice Rink, and McVann‑O’Keefe Skating Rink. This effort brought in about 100 additional pairs of gently used skates.

Where do these Skates Go?
The vast majority of the skates we collect are fully reusable. These skates have been redirected to:
-
skating‑focused nonprofit organizations,
-
adaptive skating programs, and
-
our nationwide reuse effort through our online Mercari storefront.

Through these drives, we ensure skates stay on the ice and out of landfills—supporting access, sustainability, and community impact all at once.
